Dragon’s Blood

Drago’s blood resin, vibrant red in color, is obtained from different plant species called Drago, from different genera such as Croton, Dracaena, Daemonorops, Calamus rotang and Pterocarpus. Its name is due to its dark red color, and its aroma is strong and spicy. The resin is extracted from the trunk of the tree or its branches when it is injured.
This resin has been used since ancient times by the Romans, Greeks, Chinese, Indians and Middle Eastern peoples as a varnish, dye, incense and medicine. While the ancient Romans confused dragon’s blood resin with the poisonous mineral cinnabar (mercury sulfide), the Chinese did not distinguish between the different species of dragon’s blood.
In the Canary Islands, dragon’s blood resin is obtained from the Dracaena draco species. Dragon blood resin from the Daemonorops species was produced in Indonesia, known as jernang or djernang.
Used as a varnish for wood and violins, this resin is also used in popular medicine to heal wounds, stop bleeding, as a coagulant, diarrhea, ulcers, it is bactericidal and tones the blood.
